Salai Van Lal (aka John) Hmuak is one of thousands of displaced Burmese nationals living in Thailand to escape the civil war in Myanmar and avoid conscription by the military junta.
Originally from Chin province, to make a living he competes in Muay Thai tournaments and has become an inspiration to the local ex-pat Burmese community in northern Thailand.
