Fiona Kirk discovered she had vitiligo when she was 12 years old, after a day out in the sun permanently altered the pigmentation on her face and the colouring in her hair.
Vitiligo, a condition in which the skin loses its pigment cells (melanocytes), can affect different areas of the skin and hair.
The condition is under-represented in social media and advertising with only a few ‘token’ models, such as Winnie Harlow, filling the space, and Fiona, 22, from Newtown, in Sydney’s inner west, says it affects how she sees herself.
