Women, men, children and priests clashed outside the New South Wales Parliament – while inside, politicians began deciding if women who have abortions are to continue being treated like criminals.
The at times heated confrontation today (August 6) is in response to a Private Members Bill calling for non life-threatening abortions to be removed from the state’s 119-year-old Criminal Code. NSW is the only state to label abortion a criminal act.
Independent MP for Sydney Alex Greenwich introduced the Bill to Parliament last week. Debate is expected to continue for the most of the week.
Amaani Siddeek and Kate Atkinson spoke to those in favour of both pro-choice and pro-life.
