Enrolments in creative arts courses have declined across Australia over the past several years, as repeated governments prioritise stem subjects.

Participation in senior secondary arts subjects has fallen, while the provision of arts education in primary schools has also decreased.

Figures released by the Australian Curriculum and Assessment Authority of Year 12 enrollments show double digit declines in drama, dance, music and visual arts from 2015 to 2023.

While, between 2008 and 2025, 48 creative arts courses were discontinued at Australian universities.

For young people considering a creative career, the rising cost of tertiary education presents another barrier.

Research suggests this may disproportionately discourage people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds pursuing a career in the arts.

Alexandra Lusty, 21, is preparing to enter the industry after graduating from Sydney Dance Company’s pre-professional year.

While Lusty has been able to pursue an education in the arts, she is concerned about the opportunities available to the next generation and what the industry will look like in five years.
